Urban
Ecology Environment |
| Introduction |
The vision of the Urban Ecology & Environments Program
is to develop the management of healthy
and biodiverse urban environments on the basis of the
knowledge and information of ecology.
Today a large proportion of people live in cities and
accordingly ecological knowledge and
consciousness is most relevant to urban populations. City
people need to make informed choices
about the nature of urban development so that cities can
be made healthier, more humane and less
ecologically damaging. We need to ensure that the needs
of urban populations are met in ways that
do not compromise the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs.
The Program will develop the understanding of the structure,
the function and the planning of urban
environment and lead to ways of sustainably managing and
maintaining urban ecosystems while
increasing the quality of life for people living in urban
areas. The topics of the Program utilize
dynamic, inquiry-based single and multi-session programs
that match in-class curricula focusing
on a wide variety of ecology, biology, physical science,
and social science for students and
trainees. With a focus on the interconnection of ecological
systems in local urban environments, the
programs of curriculum-based, practice-based, and community-based
help to foster a sense of
stewardship and environmental awareness among students.
Hands-on science experiences, such
as observing, experimenting, creating, writing, drawing,
and presenting help students to develop a
personal connection to scientific inquiry and an appreciation
for the world around them. Central to
this is development of interdisciplinary holistic and
integrated research with both theoretical and
applied aspects of ecological sciences.
Approximately 20 team members with specific interests
in urban ecology and environment have
participated the principal part of this program in one
way or the other. The members are composed
of professors in major universities, researchers of institutes,
officials in public organization, and
consultants and managers in private companies. |
